This Five Dhyani Buddha Mandala Thangka painting is hand-painted on high-quality cotton canvas by a Master artist. The size of this thangka is 48 x 38 cm. It is also known as the Buddha Mandala.
In Vajrayana, mandalas are specially used for meditation practice, and the Five Dhyani Buddhas are often depicted. They are known as the Five Tathagatas: transcendent beings, embodiments of the five virtues of the primordial Buddha Vairocana, set here at the center of the Mandala.
Amoghasiddhi, Amitabha, Akshobhya, and Ratnasambhava are the other Dhyani Buddhas. They are located in others along with the cardinal points in some thangka paintings, such as in this mandala, they are mounted in the corners.
This mandala is also known as the mandala of five circles and is meant to encourage meditation.
Every circle around the Buddhas is a sign of defense against external intervention. Within the circle, the ring of lotus petals symbolizes purity and the spiritual purpose required for meditation to be practiced.
A circle of flames is seen within the lotus ring, a reflection of the fire of wisdom that kills ignorance and enables the practitioner to join the mandala.
