Definitely one of the most beautiful thangka paintings, the Kalachakra mandala is admired for the symbolic elements that make up it and the visual depiction of significant traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings.
His Holiness, the Dalai Lama explained, among individuals who interpreted the Kalachakra mandala simply as a work of art, several mistaken interpretations have circulated.
A number of rituals called “Kalachakra Empowerment Initiation” are attended by the Dalai Lama himself, and the construction of the Kalachakra mandala is used as a visual textbook for Buddhist practices.
The initiation of the Kalacakra is based on the principles of Time (Kala) and Cycles (Chakra) and the disciple should have gained knowledge of the three key aspects of the Mahayana doctrine before approaching these rituals: Samsara, Bodhichitta, and Emptiness.
First of all, knowing how to show the Kalachakra mandala correctly is significant. Note the four separate colors (red, yellow/orange, white, and black) of the main inner elements. With the black side facing backward, the mandala must be aligned.
The outer ring is called the defensive ring or the wisdom circle. It is covered with golden flames and produces a rainbow that symbolizes the five elements of primitive knowledge and the five Dhyani Buddhas by the combination of these colors.
There are four inner rings surrounding the space ring, reflecting the four main elements: Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. There were 3 distinct inner layers in the central part of the mandala, called a Body, Speech, and Mind mandalas.
The geometric form is the projection of four gates and five floors of a majestic palace. There are a total of 536 deities represented inside the Body Mandala with syllables and symbols. Within the main gates and defending the outer walls, illustrating the months of the year, twelve animals are depicted.
The Body Mandala contains the Speech Mandala that has the same geometry and 36 offering goddesses and 80 Yoginis are depicted within it.
The innermost portion is called the Mandala mind, which occupies the last three floors of the palace and houses 80 gods.
In the middle, the lotus flower is the emblem of the mind of Buddha.
There are many designs for the Kalachakra mandala thangka paintings. Two deities are represented in the middle of the mandala instead of the lotus flower in the most complicated works of art.
In Yab-Yum, these important deities are Kalachakra and Vishvamata: the divine tantric union symbolizing the cyclical existence of time. “This is why the” time wheel “is often called the Kalachakra Mandala.
The powerful mantra of Kalachakra: Om Ham Ksha Ma La Va Ra Ya Sva Ha.
